Why Indicators Work (and Don't)

Technical indicators are mathematical calculations based on price and volume. They don't predict the future—they help you understand current market conditions and identify high-probability trading opportunities. The key is using the RIGHT indicators for YOUR trading style and understanding their limitations.

Lagging vs Leading

Moving averages lag price (confirm trends after they start). Oscillators like RSI lead price (warn of momentum shifts before trend changes). Use both types together.

Trending vs Ranging

MACD and moving averages excel in trending markets but give false signals in ranges. RSI and Stochastic work great in ranges but whipsaw in strong trends. Choose wisely.

Confirmation is Key

Never trade a single indicator signal. Wait for price action confirmation (candle patterns), multiple indicator confluence, or support/resistance level alignment.

Indicator Mastery Learning Path

1

Start with One Moving Average

Master a single 20 or 50 EMA first. Learn to identify trends, use it as dynamic support/resistance, and recognize when price respects vs breaks through it.

2

Add One Oscillator

Choose RSI or Stochastic. Learn overbought/oversold levels, divergences, and how to combine with your moving average for entry timing. Don't add more yet.

3

Learn ATR for Risk Management

ATR isn't for entries—it's for dynamic stop-losses and position sizing based on current volatility. This alone will improve your risk management significantly.

4

Study Multi-Indicator Confirmation

Only after mastering individual indicators, learn to combine 2-3 indicators for confluence. Example: 50 EMA + RSI divergence + support level = high-probability trade.

5

Test Advanced Systems (Optional)

Explore Ichimoku or multiple MACD timeframes if interested. But remember: simple systems with proper execution beat complex systems with poor discipline.
