Forex Trading Hours and Sessions

The forex market is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Understanding trading sessions is crucial for timing your trades.

The Three Major Sessions

Asian Session (Tokyo)

Time: 12:00 AM - 9:00 AM GMT Pairs: USD/JPY, AUD/USD, NZD/USD Characteristics:

  • Lower volatility
  • Tighter ranges
  • Good for range trading
  • Average EUR/USD range: 30-50 pips

London Session

Time: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM GMT Pairs: All EUR and GBP pairs Characteristics:

  • Highest volume (~40% of daily volume)
  • Strong trends
  • Best liquidity
  • Average EUR/USD range: 80-120 pips

New York Session

Time: 1:00 PM - 10:00 PM GMT Pairs: All USD pairs Characteristics:

  • High volatility
  • Strong moves during overlap with London
  • Major economic releases (NFP, CPI)
  • Average EUR/USD range: 70-100 pips

Session Overlaps (Peak Trading)

London-New York Overlap

Time: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM GMT (4 hours) Volume: Highest of the day Best pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY Volatility: Maximum

This is when 70%+ of daily forex volume occurs. Best time for day trading.

Asian-London Overlap

Time: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM GMT (1 hour) Volume: Moderate Best pairs: EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY

Best Times to Trade by Style

Scalping

Best: London-NY overlap (1-5 PM GMT) Why: Tight spreads, high liquidity, fast moves

Day Trading

Best: London session + overlap (8 AM - 5 PM GMT) Why: Strong trends, good range moves

Swing Trading

Best: Any session (position held days) Why: Session timing less critical

Sunday Open (5 PM EST)
